Dr Peter Mackereth PhD MA RGN. Cert Ed. Dip. Nursing Hon is Lecturer/Researcher at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
In addition to working as a complementary therapist for over 30 years, Peter completed nurse training in 1979. He has since worked in intensive care, neurology, and oncology in various roles, including Charge Nurse, Clinical Teacher/Tutor and Research Nurse. Peter has also been a Lecturer/Reader within the University setting. The therapies he practises are aromatherapy/massage, reflexology, acupuncture, and hypnotherapy. In 2001, Peter became Clinical Lead for the Complementary Therapy Team at The Christie, and during the 15 years he worked in this role he established an award-winning ‘CALM Service’ to assist with anxiety and phobias related to medical procedures.
Peter has authored numerous papers and speaks nationally and internationally on complementary therapies and cancer care. Peter’s recent and on-going studies include evaluating interventions for needle anxiety/phobia, fatigue, smoking cessation, peripheral neuropathy, and lung cancer related breathlessness. He continued providing therapies at a local hospice to inpatients, with additional focus on a dementia and motor neurone disease services for patients and carers. As the pandemic emerged Peter returned to being nurse, first doing COVID-19 screening and now working in a major vaccination centre since January 2021. In July 2021 he was given a ‘Vaccination Stars Award’ for his work on needle anxiety and phobia, helping patients, and with teaching techniques to staff.
